A local citation is any place online that mentions your business's name, address and phone number, often shortened to NAP. Your Google Business Profile is one. So is your Justdial page, your IndiaMART listing, your Facebook page, and that article in the local paper that mentioned your shop.

Citations do two jobs. They help customers find you on the sites they already use, and they help Google trust that your business is real and is where you say it is. That trust feeds into your Google Maps ranking.

Why consistency matters more than quantity

Google compares what it sees about you across the web. If your name, address and phone are the same everywhere, that's a strong, consistent signal. If one site says "Shop 4, MG Road" and another says "Shop No. 4, Mahatma Gandhi Rd, Near Bus Stand", with two different phone numbers, Google has to guess which is right, and customers might call a number you no longer use.

That's why NAP consistency matters more than having hundreds of listings. Ten accurate listings beat a hundred messy ones.

Start by writing your NAP once

Before you touch any directory, decide exactly how your details should look, and copy them from this master version every time.

The core listings every Indian business should have

These matter for almost every type of business:

Platform

Why it matters

Google Business Profile

Powers Google Search and Google Maps. Your most important listing by far.

Apple Business Connect

Puts you on Apple Maps, which iPhone users see by default.

Bing Places

Feeds Bing and some other services. Can import from your Google profile.

Justdial

One of the most-used local search sites in India.

Sulekha

Popular for services such as home repairs, tutors and events.

Facebook Page

Many people still check Facebook for hours, photos and reviews.

Instagram business profile

Lets you show your address, contact buttons and work in one place.

WhatsApp Business

Your business profile can carry your address, hours and catalogue.

Most of these are free. Some, like Justdial and IndiaMART, also sell paid plans for more leads. You don't need a paid plan to get a correct, useful listing.

Industry-specific sites

Beyond the core list, the best citations are the ones your customers actually use. Pick your business type to see where it's worth being listed.

Clean up old and wrong listings

Old listings with an old address or a disconnected number are worse than no listing at all. They send customers to the wrong place, and they muddy the signal Google gets.

  1. Search Google for your phone number, your old phone number and your old address in quotes.

  2. Note every listing that shows up, including ones you didn't create.

  3. Claim the ones you can, then update them to match your master NAP.

  4. If a site has two listings for you, ask it to merge or remove the duplicate.

Repeat this once or twice a year, and every time you move or change your number.

Should you pay a "citation building" service?

For most small businesses in India, no. Paying for hundreds of listings on random directories nobody visits rarely helps, and it can scatter inconsistent details across the web. Doing the core list and your industry sites yourself takes an afternoon and gives you full control.

A paid service can make sense if you have many branches and need to keep dozens of listings in sync. Even then, ask exactly which sites they use, and make sure you own the logins.

Frequently asked questions

What does NAP stand for?
NAP stands for name, address and phone number. Keeping it identical across all your listings is the most important part of local citations.
Do local citations still matter in 2026?
Yes, but mostly as a consistency and trust signal rather than a "more is better" game. Accurate listings on the sites your customers use still help, both for search and for real enquiries.
How many citations does a business need?
There's no fixed number. Cover the core platforms and the main sites for your industry first. After that, focus on quality local mentions rather than more directories.
Do I need to list my business on Justdial?
It's worth having a free, accurate listing because many people in India still search there. A paid plan is optional and depends on whether it brings you real leads.
